What does pick rate measure?+
It measures warehouse picking productivity — how many order lines, units, or picks a worker (or team) completes per hour, a key efficiency metric in fulfillment operations.
What inputs are needed?+
The total number of picks (or units/lines picked) completed and the total time spent picking, in hours.
How is pick rate calculated?+
Divide total picks by total hours worked. Completing 480 picks in an 8-hour shift gives a pick rate of 60 picks per hour.
Why does pick rate vary so much between warehouses?+
It depends heavily on warehouse layout, item size, travel distance between picks, and picking method (batch, zone, or single-order picking) — a well-organized layout can dramatically raise pick rate without working staff any harder.
Should I count travel time or only the physical pick action?+
Most operational pick rate metrics include total time on the floor (travel plus the pick itself), since travel time is a real cost driver — excluding it would make the rate look artificially high and hide layout inefficiencies.
