It's the weight that a freight carrier actually bills you for — the greater of the shipment's actual (gross) weight and its volumetric weight. It exists so carriers are compensated fairly for space, not just mass.

The actual gross weight of the shipment, plus its dimensions (length, width, height) and the volumetric divisor used by your carrier, so the tool can calculate volumetric weight and compare it to actual weight.

The calculator computes volumetric weight from the dimensions and divisor, then compares it to the actual weight you entered, and returns whichever number is larger — that is what you'll be billed against.

This happens whenever the shipment is bulky relative to its mass — foam, textiles, and empty packaging are classic examples — meaning the volumetric weight exceeds the actual weight and becomes the chargeable figure.

Ocean freight typically uses a different comparison (weight in tons vs. volume in cubic meters, often a 1:1 ratio), whereas air and courier shipments use the dimensional divisors this calculator applies — confirm which mode your shipment uses before relying on the result.
