How is it calculated?+
Divide the total cost by the total CBM. A $900 shipment occupying 15 CBM costs $60 per CBM.
When is cost per CBM more relevant than cost per kg?+
For bulky, lightweight cargo (furniture, insulation, empty containers) where volume — not weight — is the limiting factor, cost per CBM better reflects the actual driver of your shipping expense.
Why might two shipments with the same CBM cost different amounts?+
Freight rates vary by route, carrier, season, and service level (express vs. standard), so cost per CBM is only a fair comparison between quotes for the same lane and timeframe, not a universal constant.
