Should I use actual weight or chargeable weight for this calculation?+
Use whichever weight the carrier actually billed you on — usually the chargeable weight (the greater of actual or volumetric weight) — so the per-kg figure reflects what you truly paid per unit, not a theoretical minimum.
Why would I compare cost per kg instead of just total cost?+
Total cost alone doesn't tell you if a rate is competitive across shipments of different sizes; a normalized per-kg rate lets you fairly compare quotes from different carriers or routes regardless of shipment size.
