Frequently asked questions

How is pace calculated from distance and time?+

Pace is your total time divided by total distance, usually expressed as minutes per kilometer or minutes per mile. Enter any two of distance, time, or pace and the calculator solves for the third using that same ratio.

Why does my pace look different in min/km versus min/mile?+

A mile is about 1.609 km, so a given effort produces a smaller min/mile number than min/km for the same speed. Always check which unit is displayed before comparing paces from different sources or countries.

Is average pace the same as the pace I felt during the run?+

No, average pace smooths out surges, hills, and slowdowns into one number across the whole distance. Two runs with identical average pace can feel very different if one was steady and the other had large swings in effort.

Can I use pace to predict my finishing time for a race?+

Yes, multiplying your target pace by the race distance gives an estimated finish time, but it assumes even effort throughout. Fatigue, terrain, and weather usually push actual race pace slower than a flat training-run pace.

Why do track workouts use seconds per lap instead of minutes per kilometer?+

A standard track lap is 400 meters, so coaches convert pace into seconds per lap for precise interval targets. It's the same underlying speed, just expressed in units that match the distance you're actually running on the track.
