Frequently asked questions

What is the simplest way to estimate max heart rate?+

The classic formula is 220 minus your age, giving a rough estimate in beats per minute. It's a population average, so your true maximum can easily be 10-15 bpm higher or lower.

Why do different formulas give me different max heart rate numbers?+

Formulas like Tanaka (208 − 0.7 × age) were developed from different study populations and tend to be more accurate for older adults than the classic 220-minus-age rule. Small formula differences compound into a noticeably different bpm estimate.

Is a lower estimated max heart rate a sign of poor fitness?+

No, max heart rate is largely genetic and doesn't improve much with training, unlike resting heart rate or VO2 max. A very fit person and a sedentary person of the same age can have similar theoretical maximums.

How do I get a more accurate max heart rate than a formula estimate?+

A supervised maximal exercise test, where you push to true exhaustion under monitoring, gives the most accurate reading. Short of that, the highest heart rate you've observed during genuinely all-out efforts is often more reliable than any age-based formula.

Why does my watch show a heart rate above my calculated maximum?+

Formula estimates are averages with real variability, so your true max can exceed the formula's output, especially if you're younger than typical or highly trained. If it happens consistently and you feel fine, your actual max is likely just higher than the estimate.
