Frequently asked questions

How is jump height calculated from flight time or reach measurements?+

Using flight time, height equals g × t² / 8, where g is gravitational acceleration and t is total airborne time, derived from projectile motion physics. Using the reach method, it's simply the difference between your standing reach and your jump-touch height.

Why do flight-time and reach methods sometimes give different results?+

Flight-time measurement can be thrown off by how you land, since bending your knees on landing extends measured airtime without an actual higher jump. The reach method is more direct but depends on marking the exact touch point accurately.

Does jump height measure only leg power or something else?+

It's primarily a measure of lower-body explosive power, but arm swing and jump technique also meaningfully contribute to a countermovement jump's height. Comparing scores across different jump techniques, like with or without arm swing, isn't a fair comparison.

What's a reasonable vertical jump height for an untrained versus trained athlete?+

Untrained adults commonly jump 30-40 cm, while trained athletes in jump-heavy sports like basketball or volleyball often reach 60-90 cm or more. Elite level jumpers in explosive sports can exceed 100 cm.

Why does my calculated jump height vary between attempts on the same day?+

Vertical jump performance is sensitive to warm-up state, fatigue, and even motivation, so a few centimeters of variation between attempts is completely normal. Taking the best of 3-5 attempts after a proper warm-up gives the most representative measurement.
