Engagement rate = interactions ÷ reach × 100

Note

This is a simplified model: it applies the counts, rates, prices and fees you enter to plain arithmetic. Every platform cut, payment fee, CPM, royalty per play and commission rate is a value you supply, because no platform's revenue share, advertising rate or payout rate is fixed: they change over time and differ by country, contract, category, audience and season. Engagement, open, click and unsubscribe rates are the standard definitions, but each platform and email tool counts interactions, reach, delivered mail and opens differently, so a rate is only comparable against numbers counted the same way; image-blocking and privacy features in particular make open rates unreliable. Revenue estimates ignore taxes, withholding, currency conversion, refunds, chargebacks, invalid traffic, minimum payout thresholds and payment delays. The churn projection assumes a constant monthly churn rate and a constant number of new subscribers, which real audiences never follow. Treat every figure as a rough planning estimate, not a forecast of what you will be paid, and check your own platform statements and any contract before relying on it. This is not financial, tax or legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

How does engagement rate by reach differ from engagement rate by followers?+

This version divides total engagements by the number of unique accounts that actually saw the post (reach), rather than by total follower count. It measures how compelling the content was to the people who were actually shown it.

Why is engagement rate by reach usually higher than by followers?+

Because reach is typically smaller than follower count — not every follower sees every post — so dividing by a smaller number produces a larger percentage. It's normal and expected for this figure to exceed the follower-based rate.

Which metric should I report to a potential sponsor?+

Reach-based engagement rate is generally considered the more honest, algorithm-resistant metric since it isolates content quality from follower count inflation, but many sponsors expect the follower-based figure too since it's the industry-standard default — providing both is the safest approach.

What counts as 'reach' versus 'impressions'?+

Reach counts unique accounts that saw the post at least once, while impressions count total views including repeats from the same account. Using impressions instead of reach in this formula will understate the true engagement rate.

My reach-based engagement rate seems unusually high — is that suspicious?+

Not necessarily — a highly engaged niche audience or a post shown mainly to existing followers (rather than new discovery) will naturally produce a high rate. It becomes worth scrutinizing only if it's paired with suspiciously low absolute reach or engagement numbers that don't add up.
