Formula
V = π × r² × h= 282.74333882308
Note
Simplified model: these are exact results of the stated idealised formulas, assuming perfect shapes and exact inputs. Real measurements carry error, and the ellipse perimeter is a Ramanujan approximation. Verify independently before relying on these figures.

What measurements do I need?+
The radius of the circular base and the height of the cylinder. Some versions accept diameter instead of radius, so check the field labels.
What is the formula?+
Volume equals the area of the circular base times the height: V = πr²h. It is essentially stacking circles of area πr² up to height h.
Does it matter if the cylinder is lying on its side?+
No, orientation does not affect volume — a cylinder lying on its side holds exactly the same amount as one standing upright, as long as radius and height are unchanged.
Why is my volume so much bigger than I expected?+
The most common cause is entering the diameter where the radius is expected, which inflates the result by a factor of 4 since radius is squared in the formula.
How does this apply to a real container like a pipe or tank?+
For a straight cylindrical pipe or tank, this formula gives exact volume. For tapered or irregular tanks, you'd need a different shape formula, since this one assumes a perfectly uniform circular cross-section.
