How is average cycling speed calculated?+
It's simply total distance divided by total ride time, expressed in km/h or mph. Enter any two of speed, distance, or time and the calculator solves for the missing value.
Why is average speed lower than my speedometer's top reading?+
Average speed accounts for stops, climbs, and slower sections across the whole ride, while a speedometer shows only the instantaneous speed at one moment. A short fast descent can spike your top speed reading without meaningfully changing the ride average.
Does wind affect cycling speed calculations?+
The calculator itself just does distance-over-time math and doesn't model wind, but a headwind can significantly slow your real speed for the same power output, and a tailwind does the opposite. Comparing speeds across rides with different wind conditions isn't a fair fitness comparison.
Why does the same effort produce different speeds on flat versus hilly routes?+
Climbing converts more of your power into fighting gravity rather than forward motion, so speed drops on hills even at constant effort. A hillier route will always show a lower average speed than a flat one for equivalent rider effort.
Is a higher average speed always a sign of better fitness?+
Not necessarily, since bike type, tire pressure, drafting, terrain, and wind all influence speed independently of fitness. Power output, when available, is a more fitness-specific metric than speed alone.
