How is total trip duration calculated?+
The calculator takes your departure date/time and arrival date/time and computes the difference, expressing it in days, hours, and minutes. If a time zone change is involved, the difference must be adjusted for the offset, not just the clock time shown at each end.
Why does my trip look shorter or longer than the clock times suggest?+
If you cross time zones, the wall-clock difference between departure and arrival times does not equal the actual elapsed travel time. For example, a flight that departs at 10:00 and 'arrives' at 11:00 local time could still take 6 hours if you crossed 5 time zones.
Does the calculator include layovers?+
Yes, if you enter the final arrival time at your destination rather than the arrival time of each individual leg, all connection and layover time is automatically included in the total duration.
What is the difference between trip duration and travel time?+
Trip duration is the entire elapsed period from the start of your journey to its end, including stops. Travel time (as used in a flight or drive calculator) usually refers only to time actually in motion, excluding layovers or breaks.
Can I use this for multi-day trips spanning a month or year change?+
Yes, the calculation works across day, month, and year boundaries as long as both dates are entered correctly; the calculator handles the calendar arithmetic including leap years.
