What does the flight time calculator actually estimate?+
It estimates the duration a flight spends airborne based on the great-circle distance between two airports and an assumed average cruising speed, plus typical taxi, takeoff, and landing allowances.
Why does my actual flight take longer than the calculated time?+
Real flights account for headwinds or tailwinds, air traffic routing, and holding patterns, none of which a simple distance-and-speed estimate can capture precisely.
Does wind direction affect the result?+
It can significantly: a strong jet-stream tailwind can shorten a transoceanic flight by 30-60 minutes, while a headwind can lengthen it by a similar amount, which is why eastbound and westbound flights on the same route often differ.
Is flight time the same as the scheduled time shown by an airline?+
Not exactly; airlines often pad scheduled times to improve on-time performance statistics and to include realistic taxi and gate time, so the actual airborne time can be shorter than the published schedule.
Can I use this for connecting flights?+
Calculate each leg separately using its own origin-destination pair, then add layover time between them to get the total door-to-door journey time.
