What is a 'signature' in bookbinding, and why does page count need rounding to it?+
A signature is a group of pages printed on one large sheet, folded together, and bound as a unit — commonly 8, 16, or 32 pages per signature. Total page count must round up to a full signature multiple because you can't bind a partial folded sheet.
Why did my 100-page manuscript become a 112-page book?+
If the binder uses 16-page signatures, 100 pages rounds up to the next multiple of 16, which is 112. The extra 12 pages are typically inserted as blanks at the end, sometimes used for notes or left intentionally empty.
Can I choose which signature size to round to?+
Yes, and it matters — an 8-page signature rounds more finely (less wasted blank space) but costs more per page to bind than a 32-page signature, which rounds more coarsely but is cheaper per page for long runs. The right choice depends on your total length and budget.
Does signature rounding affect only page count, or also where chapters fall?+
It only affects total page count and where blank pages get inserted, not your interior layout — you control where content and chapter breaks fall within the rounded total, and typically place any blanks at the very end or between clearly acceptable sections.
How do I minimize wasted blank pages from rounding?+
Aim for a total page count that's already close to a multiple of your chosen signature size, adjusting front matter, back matter, or spacing slightly to land exactly on the boundary rather than just under it.
