How is total seed quantity different from seeding rate?+
Seeding rate is a per-hectare figure; total seed quantity is that rate multiplied by your actual field area, giving the amount of seed you need to order or have on hand. It answers 'how many bags' rather than 'how much per hectare'.
Should I round up when ordering seed?+
Yes — add a margin of 3-5% for calibration losses, spillage, and irregular field edges. Running out mid-planting usually costs more in delay than a small seed surplus.
Does field shape affect how much seed I need?+
Irregular or point-row fields have more overlap at headlands and turns, which increases actual seed use above the theoretical area-based figure. Very regular rectangular fields are closest to the calculated quantity.
What if my seed is sold in fixed bag sizes?+
Convert your calculated total quantity to bags by dividing by the bag's seed count or weight, then round up to the next whole bag. Buying fractional bags is rarely an option, so plan for a small leftover.
Can I use this to compare seed costs between suppliers?+
Yes — once you know the exact quantity needed, multiply by each supplier's price per unit to get a true landed cost comparison rather than comparing per-bag prices, which can hide differences in bag size or seed count.
