Pool and aquarium relationship

Formula

V = π × (a ÷ 2) × (b ÷ 2) × depth

= 21.991148575129

Note

This is a simplified model: it applies a standard geometric or physical formula to the numbers you entered. Volumes assume a regular shape and an even average depth, and the kidney shape uses the common 0.45 × (A + B) × L area approximation. Chemical doses convert a target change into a product mass using the strength or label dose you enter, because the amount of active ingredient varies from product to product; they ignore pH, temperature, buffering, sunlight, bather load and existing chemical interactions. Heating uses Q = m × c × ΔT with c = 4186 J/kg·K and ignores heat losses to air, ground and evaporation; evaporation and cover figures use the rate you enter, not local weather. Aquarium stocking by surface area is a rule of thumb, not a biological limit. Always follow the product label and test the water before and after dosing, and consult a pool or aquarium professional for anything you are unsure about.

Frequently asked questions

How is the volume of an oval pool calculated?+

The calculator treats the oval as an ellipse: area equals pi times half the length times half the width, then multiplies by average depth and converts to gallons or liters. This is the same principle as a circle, extended to two different axis lengths.

What exactly counts as 'length' and 'width' for an oval pool?+

Length is the longest straight-line measurement end to end, and width is the longest measurement perpendicular to that, taken at the pool's midpoint. Both should be measured at the waterline, not at the deck or coping.

Is a real oval pool ever a perfect ellipse?+

Not exactly — most manufactured oval pools are closer to a stadium shape (a rectangle with semicircular ends) than a true ellipse, but the ellipse formula gets within a few percent for typical pool proportions. For a more exact figure on a stadium-shaped pool, treat it as a rectangle plus two half-circles.

Why is my oval pool volume noticeably different from a rectangular pool of the same length and width?+

An ellipse has less area than a rectangle with the same length and width because the corners are rounded off; an oval pool typically holds about 78-85% of the volume of a same-sized rectangular pool. This is expected geometry, not a calculation error.

Does the calculator handle pools with a deep end that slopes to a shallow end?+

Yes, by using the average of the shallow and deep depths as a single input. This approximates the sloped floor as flat, which is standard practice for volume-based chemical dosing and fill-time estimates.
