Pool and aquarium relationship

Formula

V ≈ 0.45 × (A + B) × L × depth

= 28.35

Note

This is a simplified model: it applies a standard geometric or physical formula to the numbers you entered. Volumes assume a regular shape and an even average depth, and the kidney shape uses the common 0.45 × (A + B) × L area approximation. Chemical doses convert a target change into a product mass using the strength or label dose you enter, because the amount of active ingredient varies from product to product; they ignore pH, temperature, buffering, sunlight, bather load and existing chemical interactions. Heating uses Q = m × c × ΔT with c = 4186 J/kg·K and ignores heat losses to air, ground and evaporation; evaporation and cover figures use the rate you enter, not local weather. Aquarium stocking by surface area is a rule of thumb, not a biological limit. Always follow the product label and test the water before and after dosing, and consult a pool or aquarium professional for anything you are unsure about.

Frequently asked questions

How can a calculator find the volume of an irregular kidney-shaped pool?+

It uses an approximation formula for kidney shapes based on two width measurements (taken at the widest points of each lobe), the overall length, and average depth, scaled by a standard constant close to that used for ovals. This gives a workable estimate without requiring you to break the pool into dozens of small sections.

Why does the calculator ask for two different width measurements?+

A kidney shape is asymmetric — it's essentially two unequal lobes joined together — so a single width measurement would misrepresent one side. Averaging the two widest points of each lobe captures the shape's irregularity much better than a single number.

How accurate is a kidney pool volume estimate compared to a rectangular pool?+

Expect a slightly wider margin of error, typically 5-10%, because free-form shapes vary more between individual pools than standardized rectangular or round shapes do. For chemical dosing purposes this is generally fine; for construction or resurfacing quotes, a contractor's precise survey is worth getting.

What if my pool has a shallow end, a deep end, and a separate spa area?+

Enter the average depth of the main pool body only, and treat an attached spa as a separate volume if it has its own equipment or is calculated separately — combining very different depths into one average can distort the result. If the spa shares circulation with the pool, add its volume separately and sum the totals.

Why is my kidney pool's volume lower than I expected for its footprint?+

Curved, freeform shapes lose more area to their concave curves than a rectangle of the same overall length and width would, similar to how an oval holds less than a rectangle. This is a genuine geometric effect, not an underestimate.
