How is the conversion done?+
The calculator divides the number of milliseconds by 1,000, since there are exactly 1,000 milliseconds in one second.
Why are milliseconds used instead of seconds in some contexts?+
Milliseconds provide finer precision for timing fast events, such as computer processing, animations, or network latency, where a whole second would be far too coarse a unit to be meaningful.
Does the result always come out as a whole number of seconds?+
Only if the millisecond value is an exact multiple of 1,000; otherwise, the result includes a decimal, such as 1,500 milliseconds converting to 1.5 seconds.
Is this the same relationship used for microseconds and nanoseconds?+
The pattern is similar but the factor differs: 1,000 microseconds equal 1 millisecond, and 1,000 nanoseconds equal 1 microsecond, since each smaller unit in the metric system is a factor of 1,000 apart.
