Electrical relationship

Formula

E = ½ × L × I²

= 1.25

Note

This is a simplified model: it applies the textbook relationship to the numbers you entered and assumes ideal components, steady-state sinusoidal conditions, balanced loads and copper resistivity of 0.0172 Ω·mm²/m at 20 °C. It ignores component tolerances, temperature drift, skin effect, harmonics, inrush, transformer and battery losses, and it is not a substitute for the wiring code that applies where you are. Have any installation sized and verified by a licensed electrician or engineer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for energy stored in an inductor?+

E = 0.5 x L x I^2, where L is inductance in henries and I is current in amps, giving energy in joules. The energy is stored in the magnetic field created by the current.

Why does energy depend on current squared rather than current directly?+

Doubling the current doubles both the magnetic field strength and the flux linked to the coil, and energy depends on the product of these two doubled quantities, so the total energy increases by a factor of four — hence the square term.

When is the energy in an inductor released?+

Energy stored in the magnetic field is released back into the circuit whenever current decreases, most dramatically when a circuit is suddenly opened, which is why inductive circuits can produce voltage spikes as they try to maintain current flow.

Does a larger inductor always store more energy for the same current?+

Yes, for a fixed current, energy scales directly with inductance — a coil with twice the inductance stores exactly twice the energy at the same current level.

How is inductor energy storage used in real applications?+

It's the working principle behind switching power supplies (boost/buck converters), where an inductor repeatedly stores and releases energy each switching cycle to transform voltage levels efficiently.
