Dᵧ = I₀(1 + g)^(y−1) × p; net = D × (1 − c)

Note

This projection applies the displayed standard formula to the costs and rates you entered and assumes they repeat, unchanged, every single period. Real households do not work that way: prices, incomes, interest rates and family circumstances all move, and a single unplanned event can outweigh years of the schedule below. The model ignores taxes, fees, benefits, grants and anything you did not enter, and costs of this kind vary enormously from one country to another. Treat the figures as an illustration of the arithmetic, not a forecast or financial advice, and consult a licensed adviser before acting on any of them.

Frequently asked questions

How does this calculator help plan charitable giving?+

It projects how a target annual or lifetime giving amount fits against your income and other financial goals, and can show the growth of a donor-advised fund or endowment if you plan to give from invested assets rather than cash on hand.

What's a reasonable percentage of income to give?+

There's no universal answer — common benchmarks range from a few percent to 10% of income, and the right figure depends entirely on your other obligations and goals, which is why the calculator lets you test different percentages against your budget.

Does giving appreciated investments instead of cash change the numbers?+

Yes — donating appreciated stock directly to a qualified charity can avoid capital gains tax you'd otherwise owe on selling it, which effectively lets you give more for the same net cost compared to selling first and donating cash.

How does a donor-advised fund change the timing of giving?+

It lets you contribute (and take a tax deduction) in one year while distributing the money to charities over several future years, which the calculator can model separately from a straight annual cash gift.

Should I plan giving as a fixed dollar amount or a percentage of income?+

A percentage of income scales automatically with raises or downturns and is easier to sustain long-term, while a fixed dollar amount is more predictable for the charity — the calculator can project either approach forward.
