Why do I need to round up to a whole number of skeins?+
Yarn is sold by the skein, so needing 4.3 skeins' worth of yardage means buying 5; partial skeins can't be purchased and most yarn shops won't split a skein for you.
Should I buy the exact rounded-up number or an extra skein?+
Buy one extra beyond the rounded-up total when your total yardage needed is close to a skein boundary (like 4.1 skeins), since swatching, gauge changes, or tension variance can easily push you over. It's cheaper to have leftover yarn than to run short and can't match the dye lot later.
Why does dye lot matter when buying multiple skeins?+
Yarn is dyed in batches, and colors can vary subtly between dye lots even for the same colorway name. Buy all skeins from the same dye lot when possible, and check the lot number on the label before leaving the store.
Does skein size (yardage per skein) change which yarn is more economical?+
Yes, comparing cost per yard rather than cost per skein is the fair way to compare two yarns, since one may come in 100-yard skeins and another in 220-yard skeins at different prices.
What if I have leftover skeins from a similar past project?+
Subtract the yardage you already have on hand from the total needed before calculating skeins to buy, but confirm the leftover yarn matches dye lot and is enough in one continuous length for any pattern requiring long unbroken runs.
