Formula

cumulative(n) = −(cost − incentive) + Σ (bill_do_nothing(n) − bill_with_pv(n))

= 9.76

Note

This is a simplified cash-flow model. It projects the prices, escalation rate and equipment costs you entered with a single geometric escalation and no discounting, no inflation adjustment, no financing costs and no tax treatment; savings are assumed to accrue evenly within each year, which is what the fractional break-even interpolates. Real energy prices, tariff structures, grants, weather, occupancy and equipment performance vary widely and change over time. A break-even of zero means the cumulative cash flow never crosses into positive territory within the horizon you chose. Get a professional energy assessment and a written quotation before committing to any of these measures.

Frequently asked questions

How is the solar panel payback period calculated?+

The calculator divides your net system cost (after incentives) by your estimated annual electricity bill savings, giving the number of years until the system has paid for itself.

What factors affect how long payback takes?+

System cost, local electricity rates, sunlight hours, panel efficiency, and any tax credits or rebates all shift the payback period — a sunnier location with high electricity prices pays back much faster than a shaded roof in a low-rate area.

Does the calculation include maintenance costs?+

This calculator focuses on the upfront cost versus energy savings; solar panels have low ongoing maintenance, but if you expect inverter replacement or cleaning costs, factor those into your net cost separately.

What happens after the payback period ends?+

Once the system pays for itself, the electricity savings become pure financial benefit for the remaining lifespan of the panels, typically 20-25 years, making the total lifetime return much larger than the payback number alone suggests.

Should I use my current electricity rate or a projected one?+

Using your current rate gives a conservative estimate; since electricity prices tend to rise over time, actual payback is often faster than the calculator shows if you only enter today's rate.
