What does 'score to par' mean in golf?+
Score to par is simply your total strokes minus the course's total par, expressed relative to zero: a negative number means you finished under par (better than expected), and a positive number means over par (worse than expected).
Why is golf scoring described relative to par rather than as a raw stroke total?+
Since courses vary in difficulty and total par (usually 70, 71, or 72), raw stroke totals alone don't tell you how well someone actually played relative to the challenge of that specific course. Score to par normalizes for that difference, letting you compare a round of 68 on a par-70 course to a round of 70 on a par-72 course as equally good (both are 2-under).
What do terms like birdie, bogey, and eagle mean in relation to par?+
These describe your score on a single hole relative to that hole's par: a birdie is one stroke under par, a bogey is one over par, an eagle is two under par, and a double bogey is two over par. Your overall score to par for the round is the sum of these hole-by-hole differences.
Why is 'even par' considered a strong result for most golfers?+
Par represents the expected number of strokes for a skilled player to complete a hole, so shooting even par for an entire round requires consistent, mistake-free play across all 18 holes. Most recreational golfers shoot well over par, which is why professional tournaments, where players regularly shoot several strokes under par, represent an exceptionally high skill level.
How does score to par relate to handicap?+
A player's handicap roughly represents how many strokes over par they're expected to shoot on an average course, so a 10-handicap golfer would be expected to finish around 10-over on a standard-difficulty course. Score to par on any given round shows performance for that round, while handicap represents a longer-term, adjusted average of that performance.
