Formula

size_MB = photos × average_MB

= 90000

Note

This is a simplified model: it applies the standard computing formula to the numbers you entered and ignores protocol overhead, compression variability, retries, contention and other real-world effects. Size your systems with measured data.

Frequently asked questions

How does this calculator estimate the size of a photo library?+

It multiplies the average file size per photo by the total number of photos, giving you the total storage space the library will occupy. Adjusting the average file size per photo to match your camera format lets you model different scenarios accurately.

Why do RAW photos take up so much more space than JPEGs?+

RAW files store nearly all the unprocessed sensor data with little or no compression, preserving maximum detail and editing flexibility, while JPEG applies lossy compression that discards data to shrink the file, often to a tenth of the RAW size or less.

Does this include edited versions, previews, or backups of each photo?+

Not unless you account for it in the average file size or photo count: the base calculation assumes one file per photo. If your workflow keeps a RAW original plus a JPEG export, or a cloud backup copy, add those as additional photos or increase the average size accordingly.

How much does resolution affect storage size?+

Higher resolution (more megapixels) directly increases file size because there is more pixel data to store, though the exact relationship also depends on compression format and settings. Doubling the megapixel count roughly doubles the uncompressed file size.

How can I use this to decide on storage or cloud plan size?+

Estimate your total library size today, then add a growth margin based on how many photos you expect to take per month going forward, so you choose a drive or subscription tier with enough headroom for at least a year or two before needing to upgrade again.
