The three numbers (like 20-5-10) are the percentages of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium by weight. The calculator uses the nitrogen percentage to determine how much product delivers your target pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet, which is the standard way lawn rates are set.
Can I apply more fertilizer than recommended to see faster results?+
No, over-application is one of the most common lawn mistakes. Excess nitrogen burns grass, increases disease risk, and much of it runs off into waterways instead of being absorbed, so sticking to the calculated rate is both safer and more effective.
Why does the result differ between a slow-release and quick-release fertilizer?+
The total product weight for a given nitrogen target is the same regardless of release type, but slow-release fertilizers spread that nitrogen over 6-8 weeks while quick-release delivers it in 1-2 weeks, which is why application frequency and timing differ even when total quantity doesn't.
Do I need to measure my lawn precisely or is an estimate fine?+
A reasonably careful estimate is fine for most residential lawns. Since fertilizer comes in fixed bag sizes anyway, being off by 5-10% rarely changes how many bags you buy, but significant overestimating can lead to wasteful over-purchasing.
