Note

This is not financial, tax or career advice. It is a simplified model: it applies the displayed formula to the figures you entered, uses a single constant rate for every year unless you supplied more, and ignores progressive tax bands, benefits, student-loan write-off rules, pension allowances and any country's specific employment law. Real careers are not smooth: pay freezes, redundancy, illness, caring responsibilities and market shifts all break a constant-growth assumption. Inflation-adjusted figures can be negative — a rise below inflation is a real pay cut. Consult a qualified adviser before acting on any figure here.

Frequently asked questions

How is return on investment calculated for going back to school?+

The calculator compares the total cost of the program (tuition, fees, materials, and lost income while studying) against the extra lifetime earnings the credential is expected to generate, typically expressed as a payback period and a net financial gain. If the salary bump doesn't outweigh both the direct cost and years of forgone income, the ROI can be negative even for a respected degree.

Why does forgone income matter as much as tuition?+

For a full-time program, the salary you don't earn while studying is often the largest cost, larger than tuition itself, especially for a two-year graduate degree taken away from a mid-career salary. Part-time or online programs that let you keep working avoid this cost entirely, which usually makes their ROI look much better even with similar tuition.

How many years does it typically take to break even on further education?+

Payback periods vary enormously by field: a technical certification with a clear salary bump might pay for itself in 1-2 years, while an MBA or law degree funded by loans and full-time attendance can take 5-10 years to break even once interest and lost income are included. The calculator's payback period is the clearest single number to compare against your own time horizon in the workforce.

Does the calculator assume the salary increase happens immediately after graduating?+

Most versions apply the increase starting the year you finish, which is optimistic; in practice there can be a lag while you job search or while the credential's value gets recognized by employers. If you want a more conservative estimate, push your assumed raise a year or two later than graduation.

Should I count non-salary benefits of further study in this calculation?+

The tool measures pure financial ROI, so career flexibility, job security, networking, and personal satisfaction are not captured in the number. A program with mediocre financial ROI can still be worthwhile if those intangible benefits matter to you, but you should treat them as separate from the dollar figure this calculator produces.
