Note
This is generic arithmetic using the amounts, rates and factors you entered. It is not an insurance quote, a policy interpretation, or financial advice. No insurer rate, jurisdiction rule, statutory limit or policy wording is built in. Real premiums and payouts depend on underwriting, your policy's exact terms and exclusions, and applicable regulation; confirm with your insurer or a licensed professional.

How is the monthly disability benefit usually calculated?+
Most individual and group disability policies pay a percentage of your pre-disability gross income, commonly 50-70%, up to a policy maximum. The calculator applies that replacement ratio to your income to estimate the monthly benefit.
Why isn't the benefit 100% of my income?+
Insurers cap benefits below 100% deliberately, to preserve an incentive to return to work and to limit moral hazard. Full income replacement would remove the financial motivation to recover and re-enter the workforce.
Is the disability benefit taxable?+
It depends on who paid the premiums. If you paid premiums with after-tax dollars, benefits are typically tax-free; if your employer paid pre-tax premiums, benefits are usually taxable as ordinary income.
What's the difference between own-occupation and any-occupation coverage?+
Own-occupation pays if you can't perform your specific job, even if you could work elsewhere. Any-occupation only pays if you can't work in any job suited to your training, which is a stricter and less generous standard.
Why does the elimination period matter for my planning?+
The elimination period is the waiting time (often 30-180 days) after disability begins before benefits start, during which you receive nothing. You need separate savings or short-term disability coverage to bridge that gap.
