How is the seeding rate per area calculated?+
The calculator combines your target plant population per unit area with seed weight (thousand-seed weight) and expected germination/establishment percentage to determine how much seed by weight needs to be sown to achieve that stand.
Why do I need more seed than the final plant count suggests?+
Not every seed germinates and not every seedling survives to maturity, so the seeding rate is inflated above the target plant population by a factor accounting for germination rate, field losses, and establishment percentage.
Does seed size affect how much I should plant?+
Yes — thousand-seed weight varies noticeably between varieties and even lots of the same crop, so a fixed volume of seed can represent very different seed counts; using weight-based rates tied to your specific seed lot gives a more accurate result than a generic per-hectare figure.
How does row spacing interact with seeding rate?+
For a given target plant population, wider row spacing means more seeds per linear meter of row to reach the same overall density, so row spacing and in-row seed spacing should be adjusted together, not independently.
Should I increase seeding rate for late planting or poor soil conditions?+
Many growers do increase the rate somewhat for late-season plantings, poor seedbed conditions, or higher pest pressure, since expected establishment percentage drops in these situations — adjust the germination/establishment input downward to reflect this rather than guessing at a final number.
