Formula

kcal = volume mL × ABV% ÷ 100 × 0.789 g/mL × 7 kcal/g

= 25

Frequently asked questions

How are calories in an alcoholic drink calculated?+

The calculator estimates pure alcohol volume from the drink's total volume and alcohol by volume (ABV) percentage, converts that to grams using alcohol's density, then multiplies by roughly 7 calories per gram — plus any calories from residual sugar or carbohydrates in mixers, wine, or beer.

Why do two drinks with the same ABV have different calorie counts?+

Total serving volume matters as much as ABV — a large glass of wine contains more total alcohol than a small one at the same percentage, and drinks also vary in residual sugar (a sweet dessert wine or a mixed cocktail with soda adds calories beyond the alcohol itself).

Are 'light' beers lower in calories only because of lower alcohol content?+

Not entirely — light beers typically have both somewhat lower ABV and fewer residual carbohydrates from the brewing process, so the calorie reduction comes from both factors together, not alcohol content alone.

Why are alcohol's calories sometimes called 'empty calories'?+

Alcohol provides energy (about 7 calories per gram) but essentially no vitamins, minerals, protein, or fibre, so those calories contribute to energy balance and potential weight gain without the nutritional benefits that calories from whole foods typically provide.

Does the body process alcohol calories the same way as food calories?+

Not quite — the body prioritizes metabolizing alcohol over burning fat or carbohydrates since alcohol can't be stored, which temporarily shifts overall fuel use toward alcohol and can reduce fat oxidation while it's being processed, even though the total calorie count is still additive.
